In one of our first blog posts, we showed you a picture of a mystery diver, who we dubbed our own Jacques Cousteau. Since then, we’ve come across a few more photos of divers, including this one from the 1920s:
So, who is this mysterious diver?
For one of the first posts of 2012, we’re looking back at another example of the Basin’s history captured on film.
It looks like there are at least three generations posing for this photo during a no doubt well-deserved tea break (after some hard yakka?). Decades later, I’m not sure which visual is more arresting for a 2012 audience: the number of axes or the number of casually dangling cigarettes.
Perhaps the most intriguing thing of all is the little girl who looks like she’s having a great day. Have you spotted her? She’s sitting behind the man lounging at the end of the front row. I wonder who she is and if she had a go at wielding one of those axes – under the watchful eye of her father, an uncle or brother?
Do you know who she is? Can you tell us anything about where and when this picture was taken? Let us know by leaving a comment or send us an email.
Today, we have another image from the construction of Yarrawonga Weir (did you miss our own Jacques Cousteau?) The information we have is that these are Muroak workmen. They were, amongst other things no doubt, involved in removing trees at Yarrawonga. The notes attached to the image suggest that this was from around 1928.
Is that right? Do you know more about what happened? Let us know in the comments section.
Today we’re starting a new series of posts that we will definitely need your help with. We have all manner of historical treasures hidden away in our archives. Unfortunately, we don’t have a lot of information on them. If you have a look at some of the photos in our image gallery, you’ll see all kinds of information or metadata related to each image. Some images have more than others. And some of them, like the one below, are sparse at best.
Okay, so it’s probably not undersea exploration to rival that of Jacques Cousteau’s. All we know is that this was probably taken during the construction of Yarrawonga Weir.
Do you know anything about it? Perhaps you recognised one of the people in the photo. Or do you have an interesting anecdote about the construction? Please leave a comment telling us whatever you know about it.
If you don’t have any information, you can still help us. Get the word out! Retweet our tweet! Maybe someone you know knows someone who knows (try saying that five times fast)!
Thanks in advance for your help.
